The Orchid Bog

Blooming Right Now – XVII February 17, 2010

We were thankful for a few bursts of color and signs of life this past month. One of this month’s bloomers had not bloomed in at least 4 years! It’s a Brassocattleya & Dialaelia hybrid from McClaren’s in downtown SF and it was budding and on sale at the time we bought it, if I recall correctly. It’s bursting out of its pot, but I’ve been reluctant to re-pot it since so many others that we’ve re-potted have yet to re-bloom… Anyway, surprisingly we still have the tag for it: Bc. Maikai ‘Improved’ x Dial. Snowflake – Bc. Richard Mueller ‘Iridium’. I assume the last name is this hybrid’s name, but I couldn’t find anything like it online, so who knows.

The other winter bloomers are Dendrobium Mingle’s Sapphire which has two small clusters of blooms and Dendrobium Rigidum.

Peninsula Orchid Society Show February 3, 2010

A couple of weekends ago we visited the Peninsula Orchid Society show and sale in Redwood City. The show room in particular had great variety and really beautiful specimens on display for a smaller show. I took a lot of photos and I’ve selected some of the more unusual ones to share here.
